Creation Constipation is GONE!

Writer's picture: Brian MoeBrian Moe

I haven't been able to write anything new since September. I may get into that at a later date, but as an artist if the mindset is not there, some things you just cannot force. So today began like any other.

  • 7am - alarm goes off and I struggle to wake up amongst all the animals burrowing into the blankets to steal my body heat as I leave the bed.

  • Shower

  • Walk dogs

  • Feed dogs and myself, give Crouton his insulin and eye drops.

  • 9am get on the computer with coffee and start working on grading and preparing for two big presentations I have at the end of January and early February.

  • 10am double zoom, one is office hours, other is student success committee. All the while printing these damn certificates of Years of Service for my colleagues that we are back logged in for two years and some faculty are annoyingly persistent.

  • Meanwhile, my keyboard is on and I am diddling away at musical ideas. I plug the lyrics into the Retail script that I did when I reworked an already existing song to fit into the show. I open up the script to the other show I am working on, Sing When You're Winning. And BOOM inspiration strikes. It took the idea of a simple lyrics, and a simple chord progression I wrote on a sticky and stuck to my laptop for later use.

  • 12:15pm go to the gym because street sweeping. All the while thinking of this song.

  • 1:45pm back home, protein shakes, fiber drink, Glucosemine drink, god I sound like a senior citizen at 39, WTF.

  • 2pm Student Success fair meeting, which is just a heads up to the crazy amount of work I have to do tomorrow.

  • 3pm Head to coffee shop on bike and start writing something NEW. HOLY CRAP! That was exhilarating and not just because of the iced coffee and the subsequent shakes. But actual, creation, of a new piece of music. The verse lyrics will come, but the chorus is there and it is a great start.

  • 4:30pm - bike home and blog.

Anyways thats basically how every day goes, sometimes more meetings, sometimes less. Sometimes I get to read (but never sleep in). Gotta walk the dogs and feed them, and then the cats, and then myself. Hamburger helper because I am freaking lazy today. Then shower and theragun on my body/ rolling it out and stretching/ be attacked by the dogs because I am on the floor. Then relaxing. Thats basically my work day. I try not to do actual "Work" after I walk the dogs if I can help it. It signals the end of my day, and I like to keep it that way. Tomorrow I have a lot of work to do, and then hopefully work more on this song. Perhaps I shall dream of brilliance.
