Chering is Caring

Writer's picture: Brian MoeBrian Moe

Well today it finally happened. The chord progressions that have been stuck in my head for at least a week have finally made their way into some form of notation on my computer. Except for the ending, it is all there and it is quite lovely if I do say so myself. Now when it comes to melody, I think I have something I like.... but obviously I have to think of lyrics. The lyrics may cause changes to the melody.... and I am going to be okay with that, and do you know why? Because I wrote it! I am hoping to develop some lyrics either tonight or Thursday (Wednesday is a school day so teaching all day). Perhaps some metacognition on the scene/ character/ plot/ drive/ circumstances/ etc will drive the lyrics out of my brain, the way that the song finally exploded out of me. YAY! It is kind of cathartic actually when one leaves the cognition stage and presents itself for finessing. It also means I can move on to the next.

It is quite fitting that today I work on music because it is the Legendary Maestro John Williams 90th Birthday. Not to add to every other "This made me want to be a composer" story.... but here's mine. When I went to see Jurassic Park as a teenage, and I heard that score with those images. I said to myself "Thats what I want to do." Now granted I have only scored one feature that was shelved, but it did have an audience at the DGA when the director did screen it. I have done stuff for YouTube shorts, musical theatre, and a SLEW of dances (much of them my own). I really love orchestral music because of the millions of textural possibilities, and the beauty of it all. Maybe that should be another goal for me, write more for orchestra. I do love doing orchestral mock-ups in logic. Just, so satisfying and warming to the soul.

As I work and chip away at my goals this year, I am proud that I am moving forward. I am happy with my progress and I just thought I would Cher this with you all (HAHA see picture). Because Cher-ing is caring. Until next time.
